The Crested Butte Native

Photographer Spotlight with Jessica Jean Benson

Denver, CO

Q: Camera and lens of choice?
A: Nikon D750 – I use a 24-120 as my all around lens, but have a lot of love for my 14mm prime for star shots.
Q: What do you never leave home without?
A: My camera, a tripod, chapstick with sunscreen and different layering pieces just in case an adventure presents itself!
Q: Craziest thing you’ve ever done in order to get the perfect shot?
A: I spent an entire sleepless night out on the rock pile at Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, during bear season, without bear spray in order to get a full spectrum of shots – golden hour, sunset, night sky, and sunrise. In retrospect it was kind of reckless and I should have been more prepared, but I would have been deeply disappointed to leave without having made the effort.

Q: If you could be anywhere in the world right now where would it be?
A: All. The. Places. I have a serious case of wanderlust right now.
Q: Have any advice for new photographers?
A: Spend as much time behind the lens as possible. Take every photographic opportunity you can get – including collaborating with and learning from other photographers who might have a different style or perspective.

Q: Mountains, Rivers, Deserts or Oceans?
A: All of it for different reasons, but I spend most of my time (in large part due to proximity) in the mountains or on the river.
Q: Favorite activitie(s) that you partake in the MS Time Zone?
A: Mountain Bikes, Ski’s, + Flyrods. (I am currently working on my goal to flyfish with self-sufficiency).
Q: Favorite spot RIMBY (Right in My Backyard)?
A: My hometown of Crested Butte – I have really been embracing the idea of microadventure. Without fail I can always find some new trail to ride, mountain to climb, line to ski, gulch/ ridge or crevasse to discover. Perhaps what I love most isn’t new to me at all, but rather the ability to revisit my favorite places time and time again and enjoy them from different perspectives – when seasons change, when you meet new friends along the way.

Mountain Standard's women's line will be launching this fall around October 1st. For now check out some of our Women's Specific Tees and Tanks!
