Photographer Spotlight with Thomas Woodson
Q: Camera and lens of choice?
A: Cameras are simply tools. I’m always looking for the perfect balance in weight to quality ratio.
Q: What do you never leave home without?
A: My Adventure Medical Kit (and WFR training), especially when filming with athletes.
Q: Craziest thing you’ve ever done in order to get the perfect shot?
A: A lot of crazy stuff happened in the Cordillera Huayhuash. The cameras were rolling as we dealt with Joey Schusler’s head injury at 15,000ft. Then again as we encountered some drunk pistol wielding locals at the end of our trip.
Q: If you could be anywhere in the world right now where would it be?
A: The Tetons. I’m looking to spend the next two months up there alpine climbing and riding my Yeti SB5c.
Q: Favorite beer or alcohol of choice?
A: Upslope Thai IPA from Boulder, CO
Q: What is the Mountain Standard Time Zone’s best kept secret? (Feel free to leave out exact location details so no one steals your secret spot)
A: The north face of Green Mountain in Boulder makes for great powder skiing during record breaking storms.
Q: What is your favorite Mountain Standard piece and why?
A: MS004 Insulated Jacket. When ski touring, I typically wear a base layer and work hard to keep warm on the up, then throw a puffy on for the way down. With the durable finish of this piece, I don’t have to worry about scrappy tree branches stealing my insulation.
Q: Have any advice for new photographers?
A: Listen to Ira Glass on the Creative Process (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbC4gqZGPSY). The more you shoot, the more mistakes you’ll make and the faster you’ll learn. Get in over your head and fight your way out.
Q: Mountains, Rivers, Deserts or Oceans?
A: Mountains of course!
Q: Favorite activitie(s) that you partake in the MS Time Zone?
A: Ski Mountaineering in the Indian Peaks Wilderness
Q: Vehicle of choice for road trips or dream vehicle?
A: Well…I’m currently converting a Ram Promaster to be my full time home and office. You’re likely to find me in Jackson, WY with my girlfriend and dog for the foreseeable future.
Q: Favorite road trip / camping food?
A: Those guilty gas station snacks that fall far outside of the typical Boulder diet.
Q: What kind of product do you want to see Mountain Standard make in the future?
A: A ninja suit? Perfect for the deepest of powder days and coziest of cabin nights. Plus it could look great at a dance party.
Q: Favorite spot RIMBY (Right in My Backyard)?
A: Indian Peaks Wilderness. I can spot my ski lines from town and there’s no traffic to get there.
Q: Anything else you’re dying to tell us?
A: I’m a big fan of any brand that supports photographers and content creators. It’s definitely showing in the growth of Mountain Standard.
